How Babies Learn Language

And one more…this article recently published in the NYT discusses how babies growing up in bilingual environments experience a different level of ‘neural commitment’ and even tools for future language development: Continue reading How Babies Learn Language

BPA Free Canned Goods

Hello!  Thought I would share this link to a listing of some BPA-free canned goods that are out there: “We’ve talked extensively about BPA-based epoxy linings commonly used in aluminum cans, especially in regards to finding BPA-free tomatoes.  It was a difficult task because of their acidic nature, but we finally found Pomi.  Not even Eden Organics, the leader of the pack, has found a way to go BPA-free in the tomato category just yet. During our tomato treasure hunt, we gathered a small list of all BPA-free canned foods currently available.  Hopefully this list will grow quickly with … Continue reading BPA Free Canned Goods

Food for thought…

Hello! Here is a link to a blog regarding rice cereal introduction and discussion on why you can skip it: Generally speaking, I do not recommend rice cereal introduction for 4 month old kiddos. It is fairly indigestible, does not offer many health benefits, and takes up valuable space in the stomach that should be filled with more nourshing foods. Clinically, I see kiddos become constipated, develop rashes and eczema, and experience sleep disturbances (instead of sleeping longer) due to the effect of the grains on the immature digestive tract.  I would also like to add that liver, eggs, and … Continue reading Food for thought…

Hyland’s Teething Tablets are back!

For all of the parents who found Hyland’s Teething Tablets to be incredibly effective in reducing your little one’s discomfort from teething, the tablets are finally back. For newcomers, homeopathic preparations of substances are incredibly dilute (almost not detectable), gentle, and a great way to avoid repeated doses of over-the-counter fever reducers like Acetominophen or Ibuprofen which can be hard on a little one’s liver and kidneys. For more information from the manufacturer regarding the recall and the new product, please visit: And for more information on me and my practice, please visit:   Continue reading Hyland’s Teething Tablets are back!

Seattle & King County Vaccine Exemption

This is an update to the current law that allows for immunization exemptions for children who are un- or under-vaccinated per the recommended vaccine schedule.  It does not take away the ability to send your kiddos to school here if they have not received any vaccines or have beenvaccinated on an alternative schedule, but you will need to have the exemption certified by your pediatric provider or family doctor.  NEW STATE LAW ON IMMUNIZATION EXEMPTIONS Senate Bill 5005 deals specifically with school and licensed child care immunization exemptions. Prior to this legislation, parents only needed to sign a Certificate of … Continue reading Seattle & King County Vaccine Exemption

Rear-facing until 2 years old

I have had several questions lately about the rear-facing guidelines and whether they were ‘necessary’, so I thought it best to clarify the issue for myself and the families I work with.  Right now, it is not the law but a recomendation to keep your infant rear-facing until 2 years old.  Here is a more specific guideline that I would encourage everyone with infants or toddlers to consider and incorporate: All infants should ride rear-facing in either an infant car seat or convertible seat. If an infant car seat is used, the infant should be switched to a rear-facing convertible … Continue reading Rear-facing until 2 years old

Earth’s Best Organic Infant Formula

Many of you have heard and even asked about the ‘recall’ of Earth’s Best Organic Infant Formula.  It is carried locally in the Seattle area at PCC and Whole Foods, and recently PCC removed it from the shelves.  After a chat with PCC to clarify the ‘recall’, I wanted to confirm with you that it was not taken off the shelves for safety reasons.  The company (Earth’s Best) had changed some of the ingredients, and these new ingredients were apparently not USDA Certified Organic.  Thus, to be compliant with their own labeling, the company actually enacted a ‘voluntary recall’ until … Continue reading Earth’s Best Organic Infant Formula

Hyland’s Teething Tablets Recall

Some of you may have heard of or read the following FDA press release regarding Hyland’s Teething Tablets: and the press release in response from Standard Homeopathic who makes the Hyland’s products: For those of you that are concerned about using this product, there are a few things that you should know: – The company has voluntarily taken the product off the market due to the FDA warning.  The FDA has not actually evaluated this product for safety and efficacy; rather it appears that it has ‘flagged’ Belladonna and this product as potentially toxic due to a few … Continue reading Hyland’s Teething Tablets Recall
